Business card ‘must have’ info

May 9th, 2007 · 3 Comments

My friend Chris Brogan, who always writes better than I can about networking, has a post about personal branding tips, which i learned something from. My blog here doesn’t really convey to readers what things I do for a living. so we will fix that.

As Chris says, it is crucial to have relevant information on your business card. I was at an event last night, and someone came up to me and said quickly, ” Hi, I wanted to give you my business card” and then walked away.

I took the card, and looked at it later. It has their name, a tech sounding company name, email address, etc.

But absolutely no information about what the company does. I have this card, but no idea how we could work together.

So, lesson one here is a brief sentence on what it is your company does. Its your 15 second pitch on a piece of cardboard. To the point, and in plain speak.

I used to describe my company, choplogic, as a multimedia production company, but people not involved in the media biz have no idea what that means. I quickly learned this when I handed my card out to potential customers and would get this quizzical look from people.

The people with the quizzical look were the people who could be customers, so i had to re-phrase my biz card statement in words that made sense to them. After all, they are talking to you for one of several reasons, all related to their business, do you offer a service, can they offer you a service, can the two of you work together on something.

Look at your biz card. Does is say what you do in simple terms?
